Your location: Arlington, TX
Art background: My B.S.E. in Art was earned at Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State University) in Kirksville, Missouri, 1976. Painting was my area of concentration with a minor in Art History. I would later pursue theological studies, earning the M.Div. and Ph.D. This discipline eventually led me back to a profound interest in the history of ideas which in turn took me back home to Art History. I now teach regular and Advanced Placement Art History at Arlington Martin High School.
Favorite subjects: Abandoned buildings, vehicles and personal property. I am fascinated with the 1950’s because that was the decade of my childhood, and I turn pensive every time I see the remnant of a structure or vehicle from that era—something that used to be new and viable, now cast aside to deteriorate. Andrew Wyeth got my attention early in life with his drybrush studies of such objects in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania or Cushing, Maine. Waxahachie has held my attention, because the town still holds such environments.
Favorite medium(s): watercolor, hands down. I have worked consistently in the areas of Andrew Wyeth’s drybrush technique, layering textures and neutral tints. At the same time I am obsessed with French Impressionism’s plein air approach with its direct confrontation of the subject matter, and use of richer color and focus on atmospheric effects. Because of the plein air painters in Waxahachie, my interest in oil has revived, and I plan to return to it this year.
Do you accept commissioned work?: Yes. Though I teach high school fulltime and college part time, and participate aggressively in art festivals and shows, I have been able to find the time to do commissioned work.
Art associations: I am a member of the Southwestern Watercolor Society, Ellis County Art Association, Arlington Visual Arts Society and DeSoto Art League.
