Waxahachie in Pen and Ink

Below is a list of handy tools for researching the history of your home. For example, a Sanborn map from 1914 may show the original shape of your structure before any alterations existed.

Sanborn Map Company

Sanborn Maps are a wonderful tool for researching your home. These maps have been around since the the mid-19th century and were used until 1970 for assessing fire insurance liability in around 12,000 communities in the United States. Several of these maps cover Waxahachie extensively and can be found in the Ellis County Museum or online through the TexShare program with a Sims Library card. You will need a link to the site and a password to access these maps. Visit the the lower level of the library for more info.

Hardy Heck Moore Surveys - 1985 and 2004

hardy heck moore surveyThe Hardy • Heck • Moore surveys were conducted in 1985 and 2004 and are available for download at the City web site.

These surveys have helped to prioritize historic properties and their architectural significance, and to make recommendations for several entries into the National Register for Historic Places.

For a closer look at the survey, we've compiled an easy-to-use database with corresponding images from the contact prints from 1985. A lot of work has gone into making this a user-friendly resource, as opposed to searching the available pdf with over 153 megs of pages to search through. Our list can be sorted by street or ID. The list is a work-in-progess so it is currently far from complete.

Waxahachie City Cemetery Records and Map

The two links below can provide you with a lot of information about your historic property by helping you connect the dots. I also recommend a visit to the basement level of our local Nicholas P. Sims Library for a wealth of information about previous ownership via old newspapers, directories, etc.
